In Part 1 of this series we took a look at a few pools built by Platinum Pools in Houston. While that post focused primarily on the backyard environments, I wanted to focus on some of the interesting features of each of these swimming pools.
In-ground pools come in all shapes and sizes, but in some cases the size and shape of the pool are dictated by other factors like lot size or shape. In the photos below you can see the challenge the lot size created for the building of a swimming pool at this particular house. When I arrived at the residence I thought for sure I had the wrong address as the narrow lot size couldn’t possibly be big enough for a pool in the backyard. The total usable space for a pool and deck couldn’t have been more than about 20 ft. by 40 ft. A lot of residential pools are this size just in water surface, let alone decking and concrete work. To make matters even more difficult, there was a giant tree against the fence line to the right of the swimming pool that the residents were concerned would suffer damage if they were to have a pool built. The designers at Platinum Pools had an interesting alternative to digging deeper into the ground, they instead built the pool partially above ground. In the picture below you can see how challenging the lot size was, with views of the backyard of both neighbors.

At the rear of the pool there is a raised wall about 3-4ft. above the water level of the pool. The fall is faced with 1 x 1 glass tiles. In the middle of the wall there is a sheer descent water feature. This water feature creates a constant, unbroken stream of water that stretches the width of the water feature.

The pool and spa also feature L.E.D. lighting. This is a cost effective way to get brilliant color in the pool and spa water at night. The light changes between a variety of colors creating an atmosphere that fits any mood. In this picture you can also get a better perspective on how this pool was built 18″ above ground.

If I had to pick a favorite swimming pool that I have photographed this would be the one. This pool has some really interesting features including an incredible spa. The spa is made out of black tiles and is designed to slightly overflow when the pool is in use. This gives an effect of a piece of glass sitting on top of the spa. The fire pots on either side put the finishing touches on this spa.

Just past the wall that separates the spa from the pool are a series of travertine tiles. Besides being an interesting design element they also serve a practical purpose by providing seating.

On the opposite end of the pool from the spa there is a a mosaic table with four underwater barstools, providing another spot to relax and hangout.

The entry to the pool has several water features including deck jets that arc into the middle of the pool and three bubblers located on the tanning shelf.

Put it all together and you have one amazing outdoor entertainment area.

Stay tuned for more in this series.
